The arrangement incorporates a chain conveyor (1) and at its input end (2) one or more root inspection places provided with turning devices, each served by an inspector or a root adjuster. For all root inspection plates are provided a common computer-controlled module withdrawal unit, a root cutter (4) an end levelling device (5), a length measuring station (6) for determining the length of each timber piece, one or more raised adjustment places (B), each served by an adjuster for determining quality and top cut-off length, a common computer-controlled module withdrawal (7) for all adjustment places, a top cut-off (8) and possibly an end levelling device (9). At the chain conveyor input end (2) timber pieces are fed individually so that each pick-up on the conveyor picks up a timber piece at right-angles to its longitudinal direction in a specific direction (10). The adjustment mechanism is thus timed so that the timber pieces are delivered in front of each pick-up on the conveyor, and that the corresp. spacing is maintained throughout the whole plant.
