The appts. uses a laser scanner (4) between two lamps (2) of the runway edge lighting system to emit two beams (A,B) which enclose an angle (alpha). The reflection from an aircraft or vehicle is detected by a receiver in the same modified lamp housing. The distances of the nose (C) from the source of each beam are measured and processed to evaluate the speed and direction of movement. The contours of the moving object can also be deduced and compared with characteristic features of aircraft and vehicles whereby they can be distinguished.
