PURPOSE:To perform ripening of fruit and vegetable by utilizing simple ethylene generator obtained by packing simple ethylene-generating composition containing metallic powder oxidizable in the presence of air, ethanol, metal halide and water in air-permeable bag. CONSTITUTION:A simple ethylene-generating composition containing 100 pts.wt. metal oxidizable in the presence of air (preferably iron fine powder having 50-400 mesh size), 15-200 pts.wt. ethanol, 2-50 pts.wt. metal halide (preferably ferric chloride) and 2-50 pts.wt. water is packed in an air-permeable bag to obtain a simple ethylene generator. Further, a layer of pressure-sensitive tack agent is formed on rear face of said simple ethylene generator and stuck on inner face of corrugated fiberboard box charged with fruits and vegetables, then able to be used for ripening in a state capable of shipping, as it is. The subject composition is extremely safe, readily handled and able to be held at a constant ethylene gas concentration.
