The anaesthetic 2-(difluoromethoxy)-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane is prepared by reacting a novel intermediate CHCl2OCHClCOCl with sulphur tetrafluoride. The anaesthetic isoflurane (CHF2OCHClCF3) is formed as a by-product. Isoflurane itself is prepared by reacting another novel intermediate CHCl2OCH2COCl with sulphur tetrafluoride at an elevated temperature to form CHF2OCH2CF3, and then photochemically chlorinating the resulting compound. Isoflurane may be converted to 2-(difluoromethoxy)-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane. The two intermediate compounds are coproduced by photochemically reacting CH3OCH2COCl with chlorine at a temperature of above minus 15 DEG C.
