Light from the laser (2) is reflected by obstacles into a receiver (3) subject to a control unit (4) which receives signals from a steering angle sensor (5) and a road speedometer (6). A range (10) of possible collision hazards ahead is divided (11) into a number of narrow zones, within each of which the risk is evaluated (12). A decision circuit (13) takes account of the path of the vehicle and the position and movement of each obstacle. It triggers an alarm (7) and applies the brakes (8) automatically in time to avoid collision. ADVANTAGE - Can evaluate deg. of risk to vehicle posed by several obstacles appearing within predetermined distance ahead.
