The cutting mechanism (19) at a sewing machine, to cut angled slits at the ends of a straight slit in the fabric such as for a pocket, has a pair of cutting blades (25) below the fabric, fitted to a holder so that each blade (25) at each end of the straight slit can move round its geometric axis. Each blade (25) has a cutting edge (25a), angled against its axis, to cut through the fabric when the blade (25) is moved upwards. The blade (25) angle is set 928) to position the cutting edge (25a) in relation to the blade axis. Each blade (25) is moved (29) up and down. The sewing machine has an input for position data for the two parallel lines of stitching along the straight slit in the fabric, and a unit to set the angles for the cut lines at the ends of the straight slit, to position the cutting blades (25) accordingly, and to determine the amount of upwards movement to be given to the blades (25). A control operates the mechanism to execute the cuts according to the position and stitching data and the length of cuts. ADVANTAGE - The system set the parameters for the slit to be cut, and for the orientation and length of the angled cuts at each end of the slit, without requiring time-consuming setting and supervision by the operator.
