A portable gas exchange chamber, for in situ measurement of photosynthesis of plants consists of a Plexiglas or quartz glass measuring chamber (1) for accommodating various sensors (20-22) and a wind simulating device (12), the chamber (1) having an open side closed by a plastics baseplate (3) which is fitted, on its other side, with a handle (4) contg. gas and electrical supply lines (5) extending through the baseplate (3) into the measuring chamber (1). The plant leaf, to be tested, is clamped gas-tightly over a measuring chamber opening (13) at right angles to the handle (4) axis. The novelty is that leaf exposure to wind is simulated by a rhythmically moving (pref. magnetically vibrated) flat body (12) which is arranged parallel to the leaf face and which has an area at least as large as that of the chamber opening (13). A gas and electrical supply system for the chamber is also claimed. ADVANTAGE - The chamber has reduced gas supply requirements and provides close simulation of wind conditions to which naturally growing plants are exposed.
