Catalyst (I) contg. Mn and A10O3, for the decomposition of O3 in gases, consists of a highly active mixt. of Mn3O4, Mn2O3, MnO2 and A12O3 contg. 0.5-5% water. The Mn:A1 ratio = (0.02-0.4):1 and the average oxidn. state of the Mn oxides is 2.8-3.8. (I) has a BET specific surface area of 150-300 m2/g, pore vol. of 0.75-0.95 cc/g, pore fraction larger than 10 nm at least 40% and open pore fraction over 65% of the total vol. The Mn:A1 ratio is pref. (0.05-0.2):1; and average deg. of oxidn. of the Mn oxides 3.0-3.6. (I) is prepd. by mixing Mn(II) salt and manganate or permanganate in (0.89-1.79):1 or (1.34-2.68):1 molar ratio, pptn. as Mn hydroxide or hydrated oxide, mixing the slurry or predried form with A1(OH)3 or hydrated A1 oxide, moulding and activating 1-4, pref. 1.5-3 h at 400-600, pref. 450-580 deg. C. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is used for the decomposition of O3 in gases and air and esp. for quantitative sepn. of O3 from air contg. SO2, HCHO, CO, NOx and hydrocarbons. The quantitative sepn. process is esp. suitable for environmental monitoring for O3 in the presence of the other gases, which have similar absorption and/or emission bands or similar oxidn. properties.
