Artificial heads (I) are based on PVC, with addn. of di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP) as plasticiser. Prodn. of (I) comprises mixing the plastic starting material with DIDP and opt. additives, and forming the head by injection moulding, extrusion, compression moulding or blow moulding. A vinyl skin is pref. formed on a head shaped metal mould, then removed and filled with plastic foam. The compsn. pref. contains 20-60 (pref. 40) wt. % DIDP, and pref. also pigments, stabilisers, and/or release agents, and the PVC consists of vinyl chloride homo- or co-polymers. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used as model or practice heads which can be made up (claimed). It provides artificial heads (esp. for use in hairdressing and cosmetics) with the same properties and "feel" as human skin, and capable of being made up or provided with hair, but without loss of surface quality due to migration of plasticiser.
