The invention concerns an ISDN switching system in which a program module constructed in accordance with the principles of object-oriented programming is used to handle switched calls. The protocol modules used in the protocol architecture (e.g. CCITT recommendations) to standardize the functional switching procedures are represented by object-oriented structural elements. During the implementation of the system program module in the switching system, objects are instantiated for connections and/or calls and/or signalling operations. A copy of the pattern type is placed in the data store from the data zone belonging to each of the structural elements concerned. The individual connection and/or call and/or signalling data are entered in this pattern. The data zones remain only for the duration of the connection and/or call and/or signalling operation concerned.
