The I.C. engine includes an exhaust-powered turbine which drives a compressor in the intake as followed downstream by a mechanically driven charger which is coupled to the engine and is bypassed by a line containing a bypass air regulator. There is an engine speed sensor and an engine load sensor as well as a control to regulate the coupling and the bypass air regulator. Engine load is detected by a pressure sensor (PL). A speed adjuster (12) fitted to the coupling (10) varies the charger (7) speed steplessly between maximum and minimum values (nmax, nmin) via the drive shaft (11). Changing air pressure (PL) is adjusted by control (14) via the bypass air regulator (9) and the speed (nab) transmitted via the speed adjuster (12) to the drive shaft (11) and regulated to a pre-set ideal value (Psoll) as a function of engine speed (n) and engine load (L). USE/ADVANTAGE - I.C. engines. Combined charged engine responds instantly to changes in engine speed and load for maximum efficiency right across engine range, e.g. reduced soot from diesels.
