Optical transmitter for television optical cable network - has laser diode optical source and electro-optical modulator, linearised by feedback from output optical amplifier to modulator for compensation of nonlinearities
A comparatively inexpensive laser diode (LD) delivers a CW signal at a wavelength of 1550 nm which passes through a first optical fibre (GL1) to a modulator (OM) whose characteristic nonlinearity is compensated by a linearising circuit (LS). Further fibres (GL2,GL3) convey the modulated light to optical amplifiers (OV1,OV2) feeding the output terminals (O3,O4) connected to a fibre network (GL4,GL5). Part of the output is fed back to the modulator via a branch circuit including an optoelectronic converter for purposes of the compensation. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for modulated HF signal transmission using optical wavelength of about 1550 nm. Complex and costly YAG laser is eliminated without loss of transmission capacity.
