The hydraulic ram (11) is controlled in two modes: one for lifting loads and one for lowering loads. The lifting control is purely hydraulic-mechanical using a proportional valve (23) between the pump (18) and the ram while the degree of lifting is controlled via an hydraulic balance valve (32). The lowering of the ram is via a second proportional valve (41) whose characteristics are stored in a program, to release the ram pressure in a controlled manner proportional to the load carried. The processor has a program for the venting flow through the proportional valve w.r.t. valve settings. A single pressure sensor (27) feeds the processor with the pressure changes in the ram supply and the effects of the load on the venting rate. ADVANTAGE - Simple hoist/lower control for fork lift truck etc., simple lowering control with programmed processor.
