The regulator (24) issues commands (38,40) to the fuel injectors and throttle flap of a combustion engine in response to inputs from engine and gearbox output shaft tachometers (28,32). A desired speed (34) input from the accelerator pedal or a keyboard is memorised (300) for comparison (304) with the filtered (306) road speed signal. The error (308) is evaluated by a proportional-integral controller (310) with a smoothing circuit (314) incorporating integral, proportional, delay-differential and pure delay elements (316,318,320,322) for output weighting purposes. ADVANTAGE - Ride comfort is enhanced with guaranteed rapid reaction avoiding wide fluctuations of speed over steeply-graded roads.
