The channel response of a transmission channel for digital information is determined by providing a preamble with a preset symbol sequence in addition to information symbols at the transmission end. The channel response at the reception end is estimated via a matched filler. The preamble comprises a periodic sequence with binary symbol values, having a period length which is at least double the length of the channel transient response. The cyclic auto-correlation function for a period length of a given number of symbols has a given number of auxiliary values for a delay variable which is half the number of symbols. ADVANTAGES - Channel response is indicated directly at output of matched filler.
