The viewing device has a peripherally closed light guidance shaft (4) extending from a viewing point behind the driver to the rear of the vehicle, with a mirror element adjacent its rear opening allowing an image of the area immediately behind the vehicle to be obtained. At least one section (10, 14) of the light guidance shaft (4) extends along the inside face of the boot lid (11) of the vehicle. The mirror element is pref. provided by a reflection prism (15) and normally concealed when not in use behind a protective panel, which is opened automatically via an electric setting drive. USE - For detecting obstacles behind vehicle during reversing.
