The cutting pick (2) in a holder (1) has an integral water channel (13,14) leading to a jet nozzle (19) in a holder (15) in the upper part of the pick holder (1). The water jet (22) coming out of the nozzle (19) is diverted, a part (23) flowing tangentially around a convex surface (10) to strike the upper part of the pick (2) to the side, behind and in front of the pick point and a hard metal cutter insert (4). Another part (24) of the jet (22) sprays on to the newly cut face (11), and the area between it and the pick (2).
