The value required to compensate the ship's vertical magentic field is stored. The compensation current for minimal course fluctuation is adjusted and short current pulses are applied at equidistant time intervals to the compensation coil to temporarily produce a vertical field intensity at the sensor. Course transfer is stopped during the pulse and the immediately preceding course fed into the transfer system. Transfer is recommenced when the pulse finishes. The transverse field change caused by the vertical field change is recorded and their quotient recorded over several ship's roll periods. The mean quotient is multiplied by the compensation field to correct the sensor's transverse field output. USE/ADVANTAGE - For correcting heeling and rolling errors in electronic magnetic compasses using no additional mechanical components or measurement sensors.
