Sealing and extinguishing oil or natural gas blowouts - comprises dropping concrete or metal cap vertically over blowout to snuff out fires, and uses integral valves to put well head back into prodn. quickly
A means of sealing leaking, and extinguishing burning, oil or natural gas well heads. A heavy cylindrical or rectangular cap of concrete, steel or reinforced concrete, is brought over the well head by helicopter or crane. The flames are snuffed out and the oil sealed within the cap. Valve attachments in the cap allow the oil to be taken from the cap in a controlled manner. The cap is secured to the ground by a variety of means such as explosive bolts, spikes or skewers, as required. Side access flaps enable sealing plates or concrete to be positioned inside the cap to prevent seepage into the ground. ADVANTAGE - Cost effective and quick means of shutting off blowouts. Adaptable to most ground situations. Pre-fabrication allows the well to be put into production quickly and permanently. (Dwg. not reproducible).
