A power supply unit has an a.c. mains (1) coupled to phase lines (L1, L2, L3) and a neutral (N). The lines connect via fuses (2-4) and inductances (5-7) to a rectifier (8) that operates in 12, 18 or 24 pulse modes. Coupled to the output of the rectifier is a load (17). Connected in antiparallel is a reverse operating inverter (10) that consists of 6 thyristor stages, controlled by a regulator (11). The inputs to the circuit are the three phase inputs (L1-L3), an input to the load (ZEdist) and the load circuit current proportional signal (idv). Depending upon the load condition the inverter operates to adjust the resistance. ADVANTAGE - Optimal control.
