A method of adjusting the chain tension of a coal plough whereby the chain strength is measured and compared with a theoretical value, and the difference taken as a measurement for the movement of the telescopic cylinder (6) of the plough drive mechanism. With the machinery stopped the reaction of the support acting on the chain guide bolts is measured, changed into a signal and compared with a predetermined threshold, and used to adjust the tension. The position of the plough, direction of travel and loading of the drive are determined and compared by computer with theoretical values and corrected accordingly. USE/ADVANTAGE - The correct tension is achieved both when the machine is stopped and when it is in motion.
