The present invention relates to an essentially pure regulatory DNA sequence which can be obtained from the 5' region of a plant chitinase gene and, when operably linked to any desired expressible DNA, results in greatly increased expression rates in transformed plants. The present invention also relates to recombinant DNA molecules which contain the DNA sequence according to the invention operably linked to an expressible DNA and to the vectors derived therefrom, as well as to host cells and/or host organisms, including transgenic plants, which contain said recombinant DNA or the vectors derived therefrom. The present invention likewise embraces a chitinase gene which can be obtained from Nicotiana tabacum L. c.v. Havana 425 plants and which contains in its 5'-non-translated region the regulatory DNA sequence according to the invention. IMAGE
