PURPOSE: To provide the subject halomethyl group-containing azo-based polymerization initiator capable of readily synthesizing a macromolecular polymerization initiator having one or the other of the initiating groups by using an ethylenic unsaturated monomer and of reaidily synthesizing a block copolymer. ;CONSTITUTION: (A) A halomethyl group-containing azo-based polymerization initiator of formula I [R1 is formulae II to IV (n and m are natural number of 1 to 10); R" is a 1 to 5C alkyl; Y is a halomethyl group having one or more halogens] obtained by (A1): reacting a halomethyl group-containing carboxyl acid halide with an azo-based polymerization initiator having OH groups at both the terminals or by (A2): reacting a halomethyl group-containing alcohol with an azo-based polymerization initiator having carboxylic acid halides at both the terminals.
