PURPOSE: To provide a computer for maximum likelihood sequence distance used for a sequence decoder that processes a sequence of sampled value from a communication channel or a recorder. ;CONSTITUTION: The distance computer is used by a maximum likelihood decoder where a 2-state trelis is based on a sequence. This includes the duo binary, di-code or partial response class IV signal system. An alive distance with respect to two stages is proportional to a peak level detected by the state. Thus, the peak level is stored by a peak detector 14 till a level of an opposite polarity is detected and a trelis path is converted into an opposite polarity state. A threshold level to convert a path in a state depends on the peak level in the opposite polarity state and a maximum likelihood threshold level. Since only the peak level of a state is stored, an increase in an absolute value of a non- boundary distance is not a problem.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
