PURPOSE:To make it possible to smoothly move a multi-spindle head for exchange so as to enhance the machining efficiency, by moving a multi-spindle head selected in accordance with the kind of a new workpiece to a predetermined position on a first guide rail during a certain workpiece is machined. CONSTITUTION:The positions of multi-spindle heads on first and second guide rails 5, 6 are detected. Further, during a certain workpiece is machined, first and second index mechanisms 25, 26 and an elevating mechanism 60 are operated in accordance with the kind of a new workpiece to be machined so that a multi-spindle head corresponding to the new workpiece is moved to a predetermined position on the first guide rail 5. Accordingly, it possible to allow the stand-by of a multi-spindle head corresponding to a new workpiece to be machined at a predetermined position during machining by a certain multi-spindle head. As a result, it is possible to smoothly move multi-spindle heads, coping with a change among the kinds of workpieces, thereby it is possible to enhance the machining efficiency.
