(A) A novel rare earth cpd.-based ceramic body contains at least 98 mol% rare earth oxide and has an average grain size of 0.4-3 microns and a density greater than 94% of the theoretical density of the rare earth oxide. (B) Mfr. of the ceramic body involves sintering a compsn. comprising at least 98 mol.% rare earth cpd. (expressed as oxide) with an average particle chamber of less than 1 micron. USE/ADVANTAGE - The ceramic body is useful in the prodn of energy prodn. cells, optical equipment and metallurgical equipment. It has a very fine grain size and thus increased mechanical properties.
