The composition comprises essentially a water-soluble resin of the furan or phenolic type and its hardener of acidic type in a proportion such that the quantity of hardener is at least just that necessary and sufficient to obtain the crosslinking of the resin at the time when the two constituents are brought together. The solution contains from 20 to 40 % by weight of water relative to the solution and optionally a viscosity modifier, especially of polysaccharide type. The hardener consists of an aqueous solution of an inorganic, hydrochloric, sulphuric or phosphoric acid or, better, a sulphonic organic acid to which a wetting agent is optionally added. To produce the impregnating layer, the aqueous solution of resin is spread over the support, followed by the hardener after this solution has been absorbed by the support.
