The invention relates to the manufacture of 1-methyl-10 alpha -methoxylumilysergol esters of formula: IMAGE in which R is a carboxylic acid residue RCOOH up to C10, which is optionally halogenated. The process comprises the following steps: a) Ipomoea seeds are extracted by means of a solvent chosen from dichloromethane and dichloroethane and the extract is dried thereby obtaining the corresponding total dry extract of the plant material, also comprising lysergol but not isolated from the complex; b) this total dry extract is treated, in liquid suspension, with a methylating agent to convert the lysergol which it contains to 1-methyllysergol; c) the 1-methyllysergol which is thus obtained as extractive compound is separated from the said extract; d) the extractive 1-methyllysergol is converted to 1-methyl-10 alpha -methoxylumilysergol by exposure to a UV lamp; and e) the 1-methyl-10 alpha -methoxylumilysergol is reacted with an organic acid R-COOH defined above to give the ester of formula I.
