The vehicle wheel suspension system uses a shock absorber for each wheel, which exhibits a variable damping characteristic. The differences in the damping forces between the shock absorbers is detected. The damping characteristic values for the individual shock absorbers are controlled via a control device, for limiting the latter differences when the vehicle is in a defined travel mode. Pref. the damping regulation control allows the damping characteristics of the shock absorbers to be hardened when the differences in the damping forces exceed a given reference value. ADVANTAGE - Prevents diagonal vibration or impaired steering characteristics.
