Known data, specific to the vehicle, are preascertained in running on the level for each available transmission ratio. These data relate road speed to engine speed on the one hand, and to accelerator pedal position on the other hand. In running over graded roads the actual instanteneous data for the engaged transmission ratio are compared continuously with the known data. Deviations beyond a predetermined order of magnitude are used to override higher-ratio selection.
