The starter motor is driven by compressed air. It is used for starting a gas turbine or a diesel engine. The starter motor has twin rotors (15, 16) with the first rotor (15) having a shaft (17) which carries a pinion (18) at its outer end. The pinion (18) engages an internally toothed gear (19) which forms part of a hollow shaft. The other end of this hollow shaft has internal splines which engage the external splines of a free-wheel which transmits the drive to the output pinion (33). The splines enable the pinion shaft (5) to be moved axially into or out of engagement with the engine.
