Bar-coded (9,10), eye-readable or graphical instructions for recipient and sender are printed (5) on the documents (8) themselves for reading by a scanner (4) working in conjunction with a selector (6), a modem (7) and control electronics (3). A printer (11) connected to a computer (2) may convey control instructions corresp. to printout of a document. In a dialogue mode further instructions for the receiver (12) may be appended. ADVANTAGE - Documents can be transmitted automatically by novel or modified facsimile machines with range of functions which can be extended flexibly without hardware modifications.
