Arrangement for simultaneous treatment of several toxic/pollutant substances in a gas stream by means of a common treatment reagent in a countercurrent, recirculating scrubber column, with the following features: provision of extended surface/mass transfer packing within the device for treating the various substances; introduction of a reagent, in countercurrent fashion and in excess of the stiochiometric requirement to treat the largest reagent consuming species, the treatment of which occurs on entry to the device; during further pollution of the gas stream the other substances in the gas stream are treated by the remaining unreacted reagent.
