Recovering metals (I) from composite materials (II) comprises separating the coatings on the metal with solvents; non-polar layers are removed by heating for 5-120 mins. with di- and/or tri- and/or tetra-methylbenzenes and/or ethylbenzene and/or isopropylbenzene (III) at 138.4-204 deg. C under normal or elevated pressure, polar layers are removed by heating for 5-120 mins. with THF and/or dioxan at 60-200 deg. C under normal or elevated pressure, paper and/or other cellulose-contg. materials are removed by heating for 5-120 mins. at 80-200 deg. C under autogenous pressure with water contg. 0.5-25 wt.% 1-3C alcohol and/or 3-4C ketone, and the metal is then sepd. More specifically the process is carried out in a stirred vessel, using a technical mixt. (III) of xylene isomers, pref. contg. 1-4 wt.% non-aromatics, 19-23 wt.% EtPh, 16-20 wt.% p-xylene, 40-45 wt.% m-xylene and 10-15 wt.% o-xylene; (II) is crushed to 1-50 mm particle size and treated with 1-15 pts. wt. (III) (per 1 pt. wt. II) for 5-60 (pref. 5-30) mins., and the sepd. (I) is then post-treated with the above hydrocarbon(s) for 1-120 mins. t 10-200 deg. C under normal or elevated pressure; pref. solvent(s) are such that the process can be operated at normal pressure. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is useful esp. for recovering Al from Al laminates contg. thermoplastics, resins, paper etc. (e.g. packaging materials for tea, coffee, toothpaste etc.). The process enables the quantitative recovery of (I) in a sufficiently pure form to be re-used without further treatment. (5pp Dwg.No.0/0)
