Compsn. is prepd. by forming a matrix enclosing a heterotrophic denitrificant as biocatalyst, and a substrate for the denitrificant which cannot be leached out of the matrix. Also claimed is an immobilised biocatalyst for denitrification which contains a co-immobilised substrate. The substrate is pref. water-insol. and is a polyhydroxy-fatty acid (esp. polyvalerianic acid and/or poly-beta-hydroxybutyric acid and/or copolymers), a polylactide, starch, biologically utilisable waxes and/or S. The amt. is 0.1-20%. The matrix is a biopolymer, comprising an alginate, carrageenan, pectinate and/or chitosan, and/or a synthetic matrix, with particle size 0.25-5 mm. USE/ADVANTAGE - Use of the biocatalyst for denitrification of water is claimed. Application is esp. in processing of drinking water. The water does not become loaded with nutrient substrates or free bacteria
