The clamping mechanism is for a power-operated chuck (2) on a lathe spindle (1), having clamping members (9) on a head (7) fixed to the spindle end to secure the chuck and actuated by a rod (3) passing through the hollow spindle via a coupling (36) and a central member (4). The coupling is engaged and disengaged by turning the rod. The clamping members (9) are actuated by a tube (12) containing the rod, sliding in the spindle but not turning in relation to it. The rod and tube are so coupled together that with the chuck open axial tube movement is converted into rotary movement of the rod. Sliding of the tube to secure the chuck to the head or release it turns the rod so as to couple the latter to the member (4) or release it.
