The invention relates to a process for folding printed sheets (2) of paper or other foldable material in a folding machine in which the sheet (2) to be folded runs against a stop (1) and is folded along a fixedly predetermined line (3) running essentially parallel to and at a distance from the stop (1). With various printed sheets (2) in which the distance between the front stop edge (6) of the printed sheet (2) and the ideal folding line is also different, in order still to obtain a fold always along the ideal line (3), it is proposed according to the invention that the printed sheet (2) be provided with at least one main mark arranged in a fixed spatial relationship to the printed image (4), that, before folding, the distance of the main mark from the edge (6), against the stop, of the printed sheet (2) be measured and that, in dependence on this measured distance, the stop (1) be displaced relative to the folding line (3), so that the fold always runs in the same position relative to the printed image and independent of the distance between the folding line (3) and the stop edge (6) of the printed sheet (2).
