SYSTEM AND METHOD FOP TREATINGPULP AND PAPER MILL WASTE WATERAbstract of the DisclosureA system and method for converting pulp and papermill waste water into a decolored neutral pH effluent and asolid suitable for use as fuel in a furnace. The treatmentsystem is used following primary and secondary treatment ofpulp and paper mill waste waters typically found in the in-dustry. After secondary biological treatment, the wastewaters are pumped to a coagulation tank where the waste wateris brought in contact with a polyamine coagulant which coagu-lates lignins, degraded sugars, and other compounds whichtypically discolor this water. The coagulation particles areincreased in size by addition of an acrylamide polymer in afloculation tank to improve the hydrophllic characteristicsof the coagulant. The waste water is then mixed a dissolvedair and water solution under pressure. Upon dissolution ofthe dissolved air at atmospheric pressure the air is absorbedby the floculated matter in the aeration tank and the flocu-lated matter is caused to migrate towards the area of lesspressure, i.e. the surface of the tank. The floculatedmatter accumulates on the surface of the floculating tank andcan be skimmed from the top, dried and ultimately burned in afurnace.
