Light from a source (11) is focussed (12) and reflected by a half-silvered mirror (30) to a condenser lens assembly (13). The light is channelled along an optical fibre (45) and focussed (50) onto the data carrying surface (61) within the medium (60), e.g. a Compact Disc. Reflections from the surface (61) pass back through the lens (50), optical fibre (45), condenser lens (13) and mirror (30) to a lens (22) which focusses the image onto an opto-electrical transducer (21).
