The first phase of a treatment is carried out at ambient temp. without breaking the tyres up or remove leads. During a second phase, remaining steel contg. pts. are broken up below glass transition temp. of rubber (cryogenic process). Conversely a chemical treatment by a liq. hydrocarbon deriv. removes the necessity of having to break up steel contg. tyre remnants. - During the first stage of the four various processes specially developed crumbing units are used for breaking up at room temp. uncontaminated external rubber surfaces, leaving the rest of the tyre and the bead intact. As a result of crumbing, clean rubber particles are of 0.1-0.5mm size and amount to 20-35 % of total. Following this preliminary process, treatments are completed by chemical and cryogenic means.
