PURPOSE:To maintain a set length of needle thread after automatic thread cutting, avoid stitch omissions in sewing in order to eliminate generation of incidental looking at the beginning of sewing, by a method wherein a thread pull-back mechanism is controlled and driven so that needle thread is pulled back by a thread pull-back amount that is set, after the end of needle thread is detected by a thread-holding detecting mechanism. CONSTITUTION:A thread-holding detector 1 pulls out and wipes away needle thread, that penetrates fabric, with a wiper 11 after needle thread and bobbin threads are automatically cut off at the completion of sewing, and the needle thread is held by a thread-holding detecting mechanism 12. A main spindle stop position correcting mechanism 2 corrects the stop position of a main spindle 101 to eliminate scattering. The needle thread whose end is held by the mechanism 12 is connected to a thread pull-back mechanism 4 via a thread length correction mechanism 3 which corrects the thread length at the start of sewing. The mechanism 4 pulls back the needle thread until the end of needle thread is detected by the mechanism 12, and further pulls back the needle thread by the set amount. After that, the thread pull-back mechanism 4 and the thread length correcting mechanism 3 are turned off. A controller 5 sequentially controls the mechanisms and the action of a sewing machine.
