PURPOSE:To enhance an arc stability and suppress the damage and wear of a cathode of the lamp, by providing a carbonized portion continuously to a non-carbonized portion at a tip end portion of the cathode, and limiting the axial length of the non-carbonized portion in relation to a rated lamp current A. CONSTITUTION:A cathode 3 is provided with a tip non-carbonized portion 5 subjected to non-carbonizing treatment, and a carbonized portion 6 continuous to this non-carbonized portion 5, whereby an axial length L of the portion 5 is so set that this L and a rated lamp current A may satisfy the expression I. Since, in this way, the treated portion 6 is provided continuously to the non- treated portion 5, a change with time of the arc strength is suppressed to a small value. Further since the axial length L of the non-treated portion 5 is limited to a specified region in connection with the rated lamp current A, a decrease in melting point of the cathode at its tip end portion is suppressed. This enables obtaining a short arc type discharge lamp having a high arc stability and less damage and wear of the cathode.
