Segment-wise approximation of the logarithm of the envelope curved of bandpass signals in absolute value form invovles seaprating an analogue input signal into proportional and reference branches. A number of proportional signals is taken from the proportional branch and a corresp. number of reference signals is derived with constant but adjustable amplitudes and a phase shift of 90 deg. w.r.t. the proportional signals. The signals are subjected to amplitude comparison and quadrature processing to produce a first logarithmic approximation with a quadrature error correction. Null point processing and equivalent signal combination produce a resultant signal to which a systematic error correction is applied. The null point is selected for calibration, e.g. in dBm. USE/ADVANTAGE - Accurate approximation achieved economically over partic. large dynamic range.
