The boundary of a character or graphical symbol printed by a matrix unit can create a stepped profile due to the 'aliasing effect' and a system is proposed to generate a smooth profile. A memory (1) stores data in x and y coordinate form and these are evaluated by a detector (2) that determines the inclination of boundary lines. A point counting module (3) determines the vertical point count changes for specified horizontal moves. The data are used by the correction module (4) to provide additional points to eliminate the stepped effect in the reproduced boundary line. ADVANTAGE - Relatively simple processing eliminates stepped symbol boundary lines.
