Rubber plates mfd. from old rubber tyres can be used as a cheaper alternative to cast polymers in the underlay from tram tracks. Heavier vehicles now used cause creep in cast underlay which can cause rail sinking and hence problems for road users. Old tyres from trucks are suggested for areas around halts and tyres from cars are suitable for open running sections. USE/ADVANTAGE - The rubber plates can be used for noise redn. undertrack, reducing maintenance and rail sinking which causes problems for car drivers.
