The invention concerns a process for precooling coke-oven gas and for desorbing coking water, e.g. washing waters and condensates, using hot coke-oven gas. The invention calls for (a) the raw gas cooled in the condenser directly to about water-vapour saturation temperature to be precooled preferably completely, but at least to the dew point of naphthalene between about 30 and 50 DEG C, in a counter flow arrangement with respect to the condensates which form, i.e. with the gas flowing from the bottom to the top, and (b) the waters to be desorbed are contacted in a counter flow arrangement with the raw gas between the condenser and the precooling outlet.
