The correlation function is an example of a similarity function. The two functions are present in digital form. The samples are stored in the addressable memory (1). The address controller (3) first generates addresses with the aid of which the functions stored in the memory (1) are read out undersampled. Using these undersampled functions, the extremal values and their positions are determined in a first step by the correlator (2) and the address controller (3). In an environment of an extreme determined in this manner, the variation of the similarity functions in this environment are now examined in more detail with a lower undersampling and the extreme is again determined in this environment.
