A process water screen with a suction device for removing deposited solid material from its upstream side is improved by providing a number of drive systems attached to the suction head or suction pipe. The vector sum of the motions caused by the drives defines the path in which the suction head traverses the surface of the screen. A telescopic section in the suction pipe and a double-acting linear drive enable the suction head to be moved towards or away from the screen. The suction pipe may be divided into pivoting sections by swivel joints. The suction pipe drive units may take the form of linear drives, so that the suction head moves in a path parallel or at right angles to the edges of the screen. USE/ADVANTAGE - This device is used in the filtering of process or cooling water, especially cooling water from rivers or lakes which is to be used e.g. in power station condensers. In the great majority of cooling water applications, the proposed filter screen cleaning method allows the cost of the system to be significantly reduced. The wear and other technical difficulties involved with moving band screens are eliminated, and the filter cleaning efficiency is greater than can be achieved in the case of filter screens cleaned by rakes.
