Thallium-doped, alkali halide fluorescent materials are produced by firstly producing a melt of an alkali halide in a smelting vessel which is insert to the melt. The melt is then freed from water of crystallisation. A calculated amt. of a solid thallium halide is added. A pause is then applied, sufficient to allow complete dissolution of the thallium halide in the melt. The melt is then cooled as quickly as possible until at least the melt surface has solidified. Finally, opt. slower cooling is performed in the smelting vessel, until the melt has completely solidified. ADVANTAGE - Process is simple and economic and is well reproducible, giving material with good fluorescent properties.
