Prodn. of cyanamide (I) comprises heating urea or cyanuric acid/isocyanuric acid at 300-700 deg.C in the presence of a crystalline alumophosphate and/or non-acidic or slightly acidic zeolite catalyst having a pore size of 0.3-1.5 nm.. - The alumophosphate can be a silicoalumophosphate, a metal alumophosphate, an element alumophosphate, a metal silicoalumophsophate or an element silicoalumophosphate, but is pref. VPl-5, MCM-9 or AlPO4-54. All of the strongly acidic centres on the surface of the zeolite catalyst are rendered inert by ion exchange with a cation or by de-alumination. De-aluminated Y-zeolite is the pref. zeolite catalyst. The reaction is carried out at 450-650 deg.C, with the reaction mixt. being in contact with the catalyst for 0.1-10 seconds.
